Discovery and diagnosis of hairline fractures and cracks into the structure of the tooth is often a challenging task. Visualization of lines of fractures is not simple and predictable as these fine imperfections get masked by the similar shades and colors in its surrounding tissues. Magnification does help with discovery of many of such minute, but problematic, fractures. However, high intensity fiber-optic trans-illuminators- which work based on the physical properties of light diffraction- can shed new light on the discovery of the most difficult tooth fracture diagnoses. This may be an important discovery as the presence and the extent of fracture can affect the prognosis and decisions about the proper course of treatment.

"Modern surgical endodontic treatment using operative microscope and ultrasonic tips significantly improves the outcome of the therapy compared to the traditional technique."

Endodontic procedures are performed to clean and disinfect the spaces within the root of a tooth to allow damaged tissues of the body to heal back to health. Small deviations from the ideal clinical protocols may negatively affect the outcome of the treatment over time. Visual inspection of the root canal space anatomy can influence the prognosis of treatment. Missed canals, cracks, fractures, narrowed spaces, among other findings, may affect the course of treatment. In fact, the American Association of Endodontics (AAE) recommends use of magnification during endodontic procedures as "Standard of Care".

We see and recognize the clinical value that proper illumination and magnification can bring to our procedural protocols. We've made a big investment in acquiring one of the best dental surgical microscopes in the industry for this purpose. The magnified and brightly illuminated surgical field enhances our ability to visualize the fine, but important, anatomic landmarks and ascertain proper inspection, disinfection and seal of the root canal spaces. The microscope has become the single most important part of an endodontist’s armamentarium.”
